1938 – MARY FRANCIS BERRY, THE FIRST WOMAN TO SERVE AS CHANCELLOR OF A MAJOR RESEARCH UNIVERSITY (UNIV. COLORADO) IS BORN  


1942 – HUEY PERCY NEWTON BORN

February 17, 1942 - August 22, 1989 (47)
Huey Percy Newton born in Monroe, Louisiana. Newton was co-founder and leader of the Black Panther Party for Self Defense, an African-American organization established to promote Black Power, civil rights and self-defense. 

Newton was fatally shot in Oakland in 1989 after a long history of drug abuse and crime.

1997 – VIRGINIA RETIRES STATE SONG GLORIFYING SLAVERY

Virginia's House of Delegates votes unanimously to retire the state song, "Carry me back to old Virginia" which glorified slavery.
