Fernando (Fernie) Rivera was born and raised in El Paso, TX, which borders Las Cruzes, NM and Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico. Both of his parents were born and raised in Mexico and passed down a Hispanic culture to Fernie, helping him to appreciate his Hispanic roots and the struggles of those living in a third world country.

Worshiping in a church where he was the minority, Fernie quickly understood that his skin color and heritage did not and should not hold him back and that he could use the culmination of his experiences and the God-given gifts to make a difference in the world. Fernie is planning to become an Elder in the Oklahoma Conference and hopes to utilize his strong passion for music and believes that contemporary music is a part of his calling.

Fernie’s theological education is made possible by denominational support, part-time jobs, loans, and by the financial support of alums and friends of Garrett-Evangelical. On December 3, 2013, Garrett-Evangelical will join thousands of nonprofit organizations in #GivingTuesday, a national effort to promote charitable giving. This one day for giving to Garrett-Evangelical is even more exciting as an anonymous donor has offered to match every gift given on December 3, up to $25,000. What’s giving to Garrett-Evangelical all about?  This is about students like Lynn Christer Mawia.  Christer, who is from Yangon, Myanmar (Burma), plans to use her Master of Divinity degree to work with social justice oriented organizations that are having a great impact for the people of Burma and our world. Christer is just one of 500 reasons to support theological education at Garrett-Evangelical.
