Faithful Servants: Margaret Ann Crain

The Faithful Servants Series gives an in-depth look at the work of some of Garrett-Evangelical's beloved retired faculty and senior scholars, as well as their reflections on their time at Garrett-Evangelical.

Garrett-Evangelical has afforded me a wonderful opportunity to walk alongside as students consider how their call to ministry will be lived out in the church. Because Garrett-Evangelical has been hospitable to a variety of calls besides the traditional one of pastor, I have met and encouraged many who eventually became deacons in the United Methodist Church. Their work leads the church in its work in the world. I am humbled by their commitment and creativity as they answer God's call.

My favorite course to teach has been Teaching for Biblical Faith. In this course students have an opportunity to consider how their understanding of the Bible, which has been challenged and expanded through study at seminary, can be shared with laity in the church in ways that lead to deeper faith and discipleship. I see people visualize the power of teaching and gain confidence that they can teach. It is exciting!

My next project is to write a new version of A Deacon's Heart, a book that was co-authored with Jack Seymour in 2001. It is time to rewrite it. The United Methodist order of deacon has been in existence for 16 years. Deacons have defined the order and its contribution to the mission of the church as they have listened and responded to God's call. I am excited to collect and share their stories in order to clarify for the Church the power of this new order.

In my free time, I am learning to quilt. I have been working at it for several years and I am feeling more confident. It is fun to work with fabric and color and pattern. I also love going to ball games, concerts and plays in the Chicago area.
