Faithful Servants: John Hinkle

The Faithful Servants Series gives an in-depth look at the work of some of Garrett-Evangelical's beloved retired faculty and senior scholars, as well as their reflections on their time at Garrett-Evangelical.

1.  What did you value (or appreciate) most about being at Garrett-Evangelical?
-- Team teaching with others especially Doug Weingier (supervising the pastoral work of students) and Paul Hessert (being involved with such a theologically informed colleague)
-- Having the opportunity to put the D.Min. program in place
-- Teaching in cross-cultural contexts such as Seoul, South Korea

2.  What was your favorite course to teach and why?
-- Pastoral Care and Counseling where I used the work of Martin Buber to center ministry in relationships

3.  Tell us about any special projects related to your work that excite you.
-- Continuing to work on my book, Value, Spirit, & Structure: An Interconnected Universe

4.  What do you do in your free time (or for fun)?
-- Keep up with world events and attend Northwestern Basketball games with my son, John.  I have been a season ticket-holder for about 40 years.

5.  What is the most exciting thing happening in your field of study?
-- Increasing awareness among students and pastors of ministry and quality of relationships “at the point of need.”

6.  Is there anything else you would like our readers to know about you?
-- I’m continuing to recover from a stroke which occurred in 2007.
            -- Have a website: clergyassessment.com
